Three (3) Safety Events Open to Our Members and the Public on Saturday, June 8 As part of the continuing MYC emphasis on safety, we will host Coast Guard Auxiliary inspectors to conduct a helpful review of all current safety requirements. There are no ramifications (other than education) for not passing. It is well worth the education. There is no record of failing. There is only passing or what you need to do to pass. We will also have flare practice with the Harbormaster and life raft deployments. All will be conducted rain or shine. - Coast Guard Inspectors will be at the club from 8:00 AM to 12:00PM.
We can schedule 12 to 15 MYC vessels for this event. Please sign up by contacting Sam Cabot ([email protected] or 508-662-7899), if you want to be one of the vessel inspections, get a time from Sam and be prepared to bring your vessel to the MYC dock at that time. - Flare Practice on Tucks Point Beach at 0900.
The event will be an excellent chance to learn and/or practice your flare skills as well as get rid of those outdated flares that have a way of accumulating on the boat or at home. Shooting a flare is not difficult, but well worth being very familiar with to save precious minutes in an emergency. This event has been coordinated with Bion Pike, our Harbormaster, and he will arrange with the Coast Guard and other safety officials so that they will not respond to the flares as if an emergency exists. Bion's Boating Class is full, but MYC members may attend the flare demonstration and participate in the vessel inspection on the dock that day. This Flare Demonstration event is to all Yacht Club members as well as Manchester residents and Manchester Harbor Boat Club members. No flares? Don't worry, there should be a few folks present with some to share. - Hands on Life Raft Deployment around 10:00!
Interested in learning about life raft deployments. At 10:00 a few members will toss old life rafts into the drink to see if they properly open. This will be helpful because buying a life raft adds a layer of safety to any boat, and hopefully it will not ever be needed. This is the perfect opportunity to see how and if they work. Bring a bathing suit if you want to try to climb into a raft from the water. We hope to see you at any one of these three (3) events. Bring a potential new member, a neighbor, your spouse and children as spectators on Saturday, 8 June! Coffee and Donuts will be provided. |
